How it works

PT-141 (bremelanotide) is a synthetic peptide that activates melanocortin receptors in the central nervous system — the brain pathways associated with sexual desire and arousal. Administered as a metered nasal spray, it's absorbed through the nasal mucosa with effects typically beginning within 30–60 minutes. Because it works centrally rather than on blood flow, PT-141 is fundamentally different from PDE5 inhibitors like sildenafil or tadalafil — and may be an option when low desire or arousal is the issue, or when oral ED medications haven't addressed the full picture. It's also one of the few options prescribed for both men and women.

Dosing

Self-administered as a nasal spray approximately 30–60 minutes before sexual activity, per your provider's instructions. May be used daily if desired. Your provider will start conservatively and adjust based on response. Effects may last 6–12 hours.

• Temporary increase in blood pressure

PT-141 causes a transient rise in blood pressure and decrease in heart rate after each dose. Do not use PT-141 if you have uncontrolled hypertension or known cardiovascular disease, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Your provider will screen your health history before prescribing.
